As four members of the Tahoe Jewish Community, we just returned from an impactful trip to Israel. While the land’s beauty and history were ever-present, it was the resilience and spirit of the people that truly transformed our experience from a simple week long adventure to a meaningful opportunity to learn, share, and grow.
We met with Israelis from all walks of life — cab drivers, shopkeepers, farmers, tour guides, and community leaders — each with stories of loss, hope, and determination. In Tel Aviv, we witnessed vibrant life continuing along the shores of the Mediterranean, as thousands of Israelis ran along the Tayelet (boardwalk) and celebrated Purim in costume. In Jerusalem, we stood in the presence of ancient history, shared quiet prayers for peace, and bought gifts from a lovely family in the Christian quarter. Trish and Avery traveled to Masada and the Dead Sea to learn more of the Jewish story and float in the saltiest body of water on earth at the lowest point below sea level, while Jess visited an art museum with a beautiful textile exhibit and Rachel spent time with her dear friend. And in southern Israel, we listened to the voices of those who endured unimaginable tragedy, their resolve to rebuild S’derot and the kibbutzim serving as a testament to the human spirit.
As we return home, we feel a renewed sense of responsibility to support the people of Israel. One significant and SIMPLE way to do so is by participating in the upcoming World Zionist Organization (WZO) elections. By voting for ARZA, the Reform movement’s voice for pluralism and equality, we advocate for a more inclusive and just Israel. ARZA champions religious freedom, social justice, and the belief that all Jewish voices matter.
Your vote is a declaration of solidarity — a commitment to supporting Israel’s future as a democratic and pluralistic society. It is a way to stand with those we met, ensuring their stories are not forgotten and their hopes are supported.
Now is the time to act (I just registered and voted-It took 5 minutes). Here is what you do!!!!
And if you want to join me on another trip to Israel, send me an email rachelyakar@gmail.com. I would love to put another small volunteer and tour group together, using the general framework of our itinerary (supporting farmers, bearing witness in the Gaza envelope, touring Jerusalem, and walking all over Tel Aviv)
In solidarity with Am Yisrael,
Rachel
