Elul in the Mountains: Preparing Your Heart with Tahoe as Your Sanctuary

Tor/Tahoe Elul Camping Retreat. An image of mountains and trees with a tent and 2 camp chairs around a campfire. The title of the trip is across the image at the top.

The Hebrew month of Elul invites us into a season of turning—of reflection, return, and readiness for the sacred journey of the High Holy Days. In Jewish tradition, Elul is the month when we begin preparing our hearts for the work of teshuvah (return), before Rosh Hashanah calls us into the New Year and Yom Kippur invites us into deep introspection and renewal.

And what better place to begin this journey than in Tahoe, where the quiet of the pines, the stillness of the lake, and the open skies create a natural sanctuary for soul-work?

Begin with Intention: Elul in Tahoe

As we look ahead to the High Holy Days, Elul is our invitation to start early—not just in ritual, but in spirit. Whether you’re a longtime community member or a seasonal visitor, Tahoe offers a sacred setting to begin the process of reflection and renewal now, with intention.

This is the perfect time to come up to the mountains, breathe deeply, and create space in your life and heart for the work ahead. The weather in Tahoe in August is beautiful—clear mornings, cool nights, and golden afternoons—ideal for quiet contemplation or joyful movement in nature.

Elul in Tahoe is Just the Beginning

At TJC, we believe the work of the High Holy Days doesn’t start with Rosh Hashanah—it begins in Elul. And it doesn’t end with Yom Kippur either. We offer meaningful gatherings, nature-based spirituality, and Jewish connection year-round—because living Jewishly is a journey, not a moment.

Let this Elul be your gateway to transformation.
Let the mountains be your sanctuary.
And let the stillness make room for what’s next.
